The House Chronicles Part I

As I wrote before, we closed on our house on February 29th. Our lease on our apartment isn't up until the end of May so we have plenty of time to get the work we need to do, done. Because Marc works such long days for the majority of the week, we really will have to cram it all into the weekends.

This is what we have done so far--
  • filled all of the little nail holes and screw holes in the place
  • prepped the three big holes for repair
  • cleaned just about the entire house
  • picked 3 paint colors, all from Behr: FR--Dill Pickle; LR/Kit--Beachwalk; Master--Cliff Rock

A lot of the work falls in Marc's department, but this past weekend I was on cleaning detail. My angelic friend Jen offered to help me clean. I felt a bit guilty taking her up on her offer, especially when once we were finished I realized she had basically spent her entire Saturday helping me (only to come down with food poisoning the next day so wow double wammy guilt) but she and her husband both insisted that she loves to clean empty houses and the finished product was amazing. Plus, it was so much more enjoyable to have a friend help out. We listened to lots of good country music and had a great gab fest, too. So, while I do feel guilty, I feel incredibly satisfied and so excited to continue working this weekend. We will probably begin painting next week and in the mean time I have about 2 more paint colors to choose. If anyone has a great neutral brownish or creamish color that works great in a hallway and/or bath/laundry room I'd love some advice! In the meantime, I have to share my really exciting realization about the house: the cabinets plus the pantry. We went to clean inside them, and they basically didn't need it! We gave them a wipe down, but they were pretty clean anyway. And I couldn't help but count them, too. 15 normal sized cabinets, 2 lazy susans, 4 drawers, 4 minis and a pantry! I also love that the windows are nice and and in good shape.

Fun, fun! Wish I could have been there to help. A really good beige color that Classic used in our Colorado house is Kilm(sp?) Beige from Sherwin Williams. Also, we used in our FR a paint called Safari Beige by Ralph Lauren from Home Depot. It is yellowish, but is still pretty neutral. I really liked it. Anyway, good luck with it all. Keep us posted! --Kristen

I've been waiting for a house update, thanks! Sounds like so much fun. There is something way better about cleaning an empty house that doesn't belong to you than your own, of course. Your house is beautiful and you DESERVE every cabinet, pantry shelf, and laundry room you get! I'm so happy for you and really do plan on coming to see it sometime. Keep the house updates coming, I'm so excited for you-- and take more pictures!

So when do we get to see pics???

I think getting help when you are cleaning a house is essential, so good for you for letting her come over...girl time is so fun when you are scrubbing toilets!

Inside passage, from Sherwin Williams is what we have throughout our house and we love it:)

I'm so excited for you! Do you feel like you're on trading spaces or some other home improvement show? I can't wait to see pictures of the finished product. Brown paints are so hard to find, it's either too dark, too light, too pink, too green, etc. We found one that we love, it's Dunn Edward's "high noon", good luck!

What a sweet friend to come help you clean!! Your "Dill pickle" color sounds awesome. I can't wait to see the finished products. We are pathetic when it comes to home decor, so we can't give any advice on paint colors. I'm going to come back to this post when the day comes that we're homeowners. Looks like you have lots of great ideas from friends.
Miss you guys! :)
